California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). Hovey, Richard, 1864-1900

Hovey was born in Normal, Ill. in 1864, the son of Charles Edward and Harriette Farnham Hovey. He was graduated from Dartmouth College in 1885. During the years 1891 and 1892 he travelled in England and France. In 1894 he married Mrs. Henriette Kanpp Russell and wrote Men of Dartmouth.
